5 hypoallergenic face masks for people with sensitive skin

AND a year ago, we would never have guessed that masks would be part of our accessory game. However, we are here. Nose and mouth covers introduce a bit of fashion, but let’s be honest: we’re wearing them to contain the spread of COVID-19. However, there is one caveat: they can lead to irritating skin irritation, especially in people with sensitive skin.

All this direct friction between the mask and skin can cause inflammation, dryness and acne breakouts, according to Joshua Zeichner, MD, assistant professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.

Mask rubbing isn’t the only culprit for skin irritation, however. The mask material also affects the skin, especially in people with a history of eczema or skin allergies. Dr. Zeichner suggests avoiding synthetic materials such as polyester and plastic fibers (commonly found in N95 masks), which contain chemical additives and tend to be more irritating than natural fibers.

As a dermatologist, I often treat allergic reactions and skin irritations. This is usually caused by dyes, fragrances and elastic materials, ‚ÄĚsays Dr. Zeichner.

If you have sensitive skin, Sanjeev Jain, MD, an allergist and immunologist at Columbia Allergy, also recommends staying away from irritants.

When shopping for hypoallergenic face masks, Dr. Zeichner and Dr. Jane recommend sticking to natural fiber masks such as cotton, which are softer on the skin and cause fewer allergic reactions. Be sure to choose one that has two or three layers of fabric for adequate protection.

To make shopping for masks easier, we have compiled a list of cotton masks suitable for everyone, especially those with sensitive skin.
