Spoiler alert: this is wholly false. SPF 30 has its benefits, but it certainly isn’t the only sun protection. The fact is that the higher your SPF and the more correctly you use it, the better you will be protected. Ahead of the dermis debunking such skincare legends and explaining what SPF is actually does how best to use it and what sunscreens to buy to protect this precious skin.
Let’s start here: How does SPF actually work?
Stacy Cimento, MD, board certified dermatologist from Miami in Dermatology Riverchaseexplains that SPF, which stands for sun protection factor, is not necessarily a measure of strength. Instead, it measures how much time you can spend in the sun without getting burned using sunscreen versus if you didn’t use SPF at all.
“SPF 30 technically allows a person to spend 30 times more time in the sun than if they were not wearing sunscreen,” says Dr. Cimento. “However, this requires the person to properly apply the required amount of sunscreen on all parts of the body and reapply it. Higher SPFs, such as 50+, block more UV rays from reaching the skin than SPF 30 and provide significantly more protection, especially if a person tends not to apply enough sunscreen. ”
Here’s an example: Let’s say on average it takes you 10 minutes to burn out on exposure to sunlight without any protection. If you apply the recommended amount of SPF 30, you have about 300 minutes of protection until you start burning. Likewise, if you used SPF 50, it would take you about 500 minutes to feel crispy. Has the meaning?
Then no. it not It makes no sense to go above SPF 30. If you use it correctly and reapply it regularly, an SPF 40+ sunscreen can keep you safe for longer periods of time.
Clear. But how do I know if I’m soaping the right way?
As Dr. Cimento said, to get the most out of SPF, it needs to be applied correctly. This means that you are distributing the proposed quantity –about one ounce or enough to fill a shot– evenly over the entire body with constant reapplication approximately every two hours.
Unfortunately, this is rare. Michelle GreeneA NYC-based MD, board-certified dermatologist, explains that natural human error and forgetfulness can do more harm than good, even if we churn.
“In fact, most patients do not wear enough sunscreen, [they] do not go out in the sun all day and, even after bathing, skip the applications and forget to reapply the sunblock, ”says Dr. Green. “This human error leads to more sun damage and you just don’t get the SPF number you thought.”

1. Climb to SPF: Don’t believe the myth. If you often forget to reapply sunscreen, using a higher SPF may help. “Using a higher amount of sunscreen provides better coverage and protection from wrinkles and sun damage,” says Dr. Green. “It’s also more important to use a higher SPF if you are prone to skin cancer. Patients with darker skin tones also need a higher SPF as they are more likely to develop hyperpigmentation, sun spots and melasma. ”
2. Choose a broad spectrum sunscreen: Your sunscreen can protect you from two types of ultraviolet rays: UVA, which can lead to skin cancer, and UVB, which can cause sunburn. However, not all sunscreens protect against both. In fact, most chemical sunscreens only protect against UV B, putting the skin at serious risk. as well as exposing it to some sketchy chemicals. Instead, opt for a mineral tanning cream that blocks both types of UV radiation. “Mineral tanning cream reflects the sun and contains ingredients such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which act as a physical blocker for the skin and is preferred over most chemical tanning creams,” says Dr. Green.
3. Don’t forget to re-apply: Both Dr. Cimento and Dr. Green agree that the best thing you can do is reapply regularly. “No sunscreen protects the skin 100% from UV rays, and the sunscreen wears off after a few hours,” says Dr. Cimento. “The best way to reduce your chances of sunburn and possible skin cancer is to cover your entire body with sunscreen and reapply it at least every two hours.”
So that does the trick – SPF 30 is not a magic number after all. And no matter which SPF number you choose, the key is correct and consistent application.
