I made it to high school without ever learning how to wash my face at night. College too, for that matter. To be honest, it wasn’t until I was in my early twenties that I regularly started taking off my makeup at the end of the day. And even then, I hated it.
The whole process was so … wet. My hair got wet, my shirt, my sink, the floor. Fu. (If you sit and think, “This girl doesn’t wash her face properly,” you’re probably right. But I’ve never really figured out how to get it wet.)
The turning point in my attitude to washing came when I received a sample of Farmacy Green Clean Makeup Removing Cleansing Balm. Because this delightful product is designed to dry skin, it immediately cut my facial skin care time in half. Miracle!
While I give this balm two thumbs down for its convenience (and effectiveness – it does have a big impact on mascara, but I’ll get to that), dermatologists love it for its skin-friendly ingredients. “This product is similar to the classic Pond’s favorite cold cream, and its goal is to gently remove makeup while moisturizing the skin,” he says. Rachel Nazaryan, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist from New York. “Most of them [cleansing balm] the products use mineral oil, but this does not. It uses a lot of lemon and flower oils to remove make-up and dirt, and contains natural anti-inflammatory ingredients. [like turmeric and moringa]… ”

How to use it: Scoop a little out of the container – the official instructions say to use the tiny spatula that comes with the kit, but I’ve always only used my fingers – and then massage your face into your face. (Bonus: Facial massage can stimulate lymphatic drainage, which helps fight acne and puffiness.) Farmacy cleanser is safe for your eyes, so don’t shy away from eye makeup. Then simply rinse off with water or a damp dishcloth. One-time cleansing at its best.
What to expect: The balm works smoothly and, frankly, the self-massage required for the product to work gives a great feeling. When you rinse your face, the balm takes on a milky texture that is easy to rinse off – and all your makeup is removed with it. Seriously, I wasn’t sure if it was possible to remove mascara and eyeliner without a cotton pad until I tried this product.
Who is this product for? “While this is good for many skin types, I would be careful with sensitive skin given the essential oil-based ingredients that can sometimes be irritating,” says Dr. Nazarian. Personally, my skin has reacted to some essential oils in the past (looking at you, tea tree oil), but I had no problem with the Farmacy cleanser.
As Dr. Nazaryan mentioned, a number of brands produce similar makeup dissolving balms. I won’t lie, I have three different types in my medicine cabinet now. But the Farmacy cleanser is what I used down to the last drop – or, scoop it up.
