TThere are many things that are really interesting about aging: lack of sleep, the ability to eat ice cream at any time, spicy margaritas. But on the other side of this naughty and enjoyable list – right below “paying bills” and “going to work” – you’ll find wrinkles under the eyes.
I first noticed my crow’s feet when I was in my early twenties when a dermatologist pointed them out to me … before offering them a Botox injection. And while I always knew that these fine lines were a natural part of aging, I couldn’t help but wonder where the hell they came from and why they suddenly decided to appear.
What causes wrinkles under the eyes?
“The skin around the eyes is one of the thinnest areas of skin on the body and is very fragile,” says board certified dermatologist Nava Greenfield, MD, of the Schweiger Dermatology Group in Brooklyn. Over time, “collagen in the dermis of the skin under the eyes breaks down and loses volume and elasticity. This is due to age, sun exposure, genetic factors and environmental damage. ” She adds that people with lighter skin tones are more susceptible to wrinkles under the eyes because people with darker skin tones have more pigment, which acts as a natural sunscreen and “prevents collagen breakdown from accelerating.”
The fact that I spend lot time staring (okay, squinting) at the computer screen doesn’t do me any good either. “The creation and retention of wrinkles causes the collagen and elastin matrix to flex,” says James Heskett, MD and author of the book. What can you do to prevent the appearance of wrinkles under your eyes?
While under eye wrinkles are pretty much an inevitable part of the aging process, there are a few things you can do to prevent them:
1. Use suitable skin care products at night: “Use a moisturizer and serum specially formulated for the eyelids that need a different composition of nutrients and moisture than other skin on the face and body,” says Dr. Greenfield. In addition, “nighttime retinol is important for preventing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as for the accumulation of collagen.”
2. Always (I repeat: always!) Apply SPF: Wearing a sunscreen and zinc-based sunglasses daily, and using an antioxidant cream to help protect against free radical damage that causes signs of aging, may also help.
3. Change your sleeping habits: In addition to incorporating certain foods into your daily routine, certain lifestyle changes can help prevent under-eye wrinkles. For the reasons mentioned above, train yourself to sleep on your back (ideally with a silk pillowcase!) And taking a laptop break does matter, says Dr. Heskett.
4. Shake dry brush: Dr. Heskett adds that dry face brushing along the lymphatic channels can improve circulation and, in turn, help prevent wrinkles from appearing all over the face, not just under the eyes.
How to get rid of wrinkles under the eyes if they appear?
Once fine lines start to appear on your face, there are several things you can try to help make them look smoother:
1. Buy hyaluronic acid and antioxidants: The treatment of fine wrinkles begins with the selection of the right ingredients. “Hyaluronic acid increases the space between collagen and elastin, providing them with support so that they [promote] smoother skin, ”says Dr. Heskett. Other stars that help smooth skin include gentle antioxidants like caviar extract and resveratrol, which “counteract the oxidation that breaks down collagen,” she says. Dr. Greenfield is also a fan of retinol moisturizers for wrinkle treatments.
2. Stay away from fragrances in eye creams: “Avoid anything with fragrances because the skin of the lower eyelids can be very sensitive and react to allergens more often than skin on other parts of the face or body,” says Dr. Greenfield. “If you have a sensitivity to an ingredient in a cream, it will most likely show up on the eyelids.”
3. Injections and lasers can help get rid of wrinkles: “A small amount of Botox can be used under the eyes to smooth out wrinkles before they permanently remain on the skin,” says Dr. Greenfield. “Lasers like Fraxel can be used to build collagen and smooth wrinkles. And hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvéderm or Belotero can also help smooth out the appearance of wrinkles. ”
4. Derm-office facial treatments can stimulate collagen production: Dr. Heskett points to treatments such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) microneedling or radiofrequency to help remodel collagen and elastin, while carboxytherapy can increase blood flow and restore collagen and elastin. They all work in both the short and long term, so if you are worried about under-eye wrinkles in the future, it might be worth trying them as a preventative measure.
